What a certified translation is

A certified translation is a translation of an official document, such as a certificate, a contract or a court document, that a professional translator confirms is complete and accurate, so it can be used for official purposes. You order it online, and translators at notarity's partner Translayte take it on. Almost any language combination is possible.

What it is ordered for

The recipient needs the document in another language, and a plain translation is not enough. Common examples:

Birth, marriage & divorce certificates
Civil status documents in the language of the country where they are used, for example for a visa, a residence permit or a marriage abroad.
Diplomas & transcripts
Degrees, diplomas and transcripts, for studying or working abroad or for the recognition of a qualification.
Criminal record certificates
Police and criminal record certificates, for example for a visa or a job abroad.
Contracts & company documents
Contracts, register extracts and other business documents for an authority, a bank or a business partner abroad.

Translation and notarisation

Does it need notarising too? Translate first.

If the translated document also has to be notarised, order the translation first and then book the notary appointment with the translated version. A partner notary notarises exactly the version that is signed in the appointment. If you also need an apostille, it is usually simplest to order it with the notarisation rather than with the translation. Check with the recipient which version they need.

What you need

  • The document as a file

A clear scan or photo, PDF preferred, with every page that needs translating.

  • The target language

Usually the official language of the country where the translation will be used.

  • The recipient's requirements, if any

For example a sworn translator from a particular country, an apostille or a paper copy. Some countries require a sworn translator for official use; the order form says so when you choose the languages.

Frequently asked questions

To the FAQ

How long does a certified translation take?

Most translations of up to 8 pages, about 2,000 words, are delivered within 48 hours, with about one more day for every further 8 pages. Faster delivery can be ordered at extra cost, though less so at weekends. These times are for the digital translation; a paper copy, a notarisation or an apostille takes longer.

How much does a certified translation cost?

The price is calculated per page, based on the language of the document, the language you need and how urgently you need it. You see the price before you order at translate.notarity.com.

Will I receive a paper document?

The certified translation is delivered digitally: you review it and download it as a PDF. A paper copy can be ordered at extra cost and is sent by post.

Can I get an apostille on the certified translation?

Yes, at extra cost. An apostille on the translation confirms the translator's signature, where the country allows it. If the translated document is also being notarised, it is usually better to order the apostille with the notarisation instead: it then confirms the notary's signature. Ask the recipient which one they need.

Does my document need to be translated before it is notarised?

No. Documents can be notarised in any language, because the notary verifies your identity and signature, not the content. Translate only if the recipient asks for it. If the notarised signature should be on the translated version, translate first and sign the translated version in the appointment.

Do I book the translation together with the notary appointment?

No. You order the translation separately at translate.notarity.com, and book a notarisation or an apostille on the notarity platform as usual.
