What an apostille is

An apostille is a standardised certificate under the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961. It confirms that the signature on a document is authentic, the official capacity of the person who signed it, in this case the notary, and, where applicable, the seal or stamp. It does not assess the content of the document. An apostille is recognised in all 120+ contracting states of the Convention, and it does not have to come from your home country or from the country where the document will be used: it is issued in the country where the document is notarised. That is why the route to an apostille on notarity runs through a notarisation, and you add the apostille when you book it.

Edge cases

When an apostille works differently

An apostille on an original document that was not notarised on notarity, such as a criminal record certificate, has to come from the competent authority in the country that issued it. Partner notaries can certify a copy and apostille that copy instead. And where the destination country is not part of the Hague Convention, an apostille is not enough: embassy legalisation applies instead.

Frequently asked questions

To the FAQ

Do I need an apostille?

Many authorities require an apostille when documents will be used abroad. If you are unsure, ask the recipient whether an apostille is required. For most international cases, adding an apostille is recommended.

Do I need an apostille from the country where the document will be used?

No. The apostille is issued by the competent authority in the country where your document is notarised, not by the destination country. Thanks to the Hague Apostille Convention, it is recognised in all other member states. If you are unsure whether you need an apostille at all, ask the recipient of the document.

How long does an apostille take?

The apostille is usually issued immediately after the appointment, so you can download the notarised and apostilled document together within minutes.

I already have a document certified elsewhere. Can I just get the apostille?

No. An apostille on its own is not possible for a document that was not notarised or certified on notarity. Partner notaries can certify it again and issue an apostille.

Can I add an apostille after my appointment?

Yes. Contact support, before or after the appointment, and the apostille is added to your order. After the appointment it is usually processed on the same business day. For a signature notarisation that has already been signed, you sign again in a new appointment, because the apostille cannot be added to an already signed document.
