What an affidavit is

An affidavit is a written statement that you confirm as true. It is often asked for by a foreign authority, a court or a registry. What it has to look like differs by jurisdiction and by authority.

Apostille

Do you need an apostille?

If the affidavit is going abroad, usually yes. If you are unsure, ask the receiving authority. You can add the apostille during booking.

What you need

  • A device with camera and microphone

A computer, tablet or smartphone for the video appointment.

  • A stable internet connection

So the video appointment runs without interruptions.

  • A valid passport or EU identity card

For the identity verification before the appointment.

How it works

Your affidavit, notarised online in six steps

  1. Upload your statement

Book an appointment and upload the affidavit. You can still change or replace it in the appointment details up to the appointment.

  2. Verify your identity

In your notarity account, with a valid passport or EU identity card, before the appointment.

  3. Join the video appointment

You meet a licensed partner notary in a video appointment at the time you booked.

  4. Notarisation

The partner notary verifies your identity, guides you through signing and notarises the affidavit, signed electronically in compliance with eIDAS.

  5. Apostille, where ordered

If you added an apostille during booking, it is usually issued immediately after the appointment.

  6. Download

The notarised affidavit, with the apostille if ordered, is available in your notarity account within minutes. A paper copy can be sent to any address as an optional add-on.

Frequently asked questions

To the FAQ

Does an affidavit made over video carry the same weight as one made in person?

The setup is built for it: identity verification at eIDAS assurance level high, electronic signatures in compliance with eIDAS, and a licensed partner notary acting under their own national law. Whether a particular authority accepts it is for the recipient to confirm, so check with them before you book.

Do I need an apostille?

Many authorities require an apostille when documents will be used abroad. If you are unsure, ask the recipient whether an apostille is required. For most international cases, adding an apostille is recommended.

I don't have my affidavit yet. Can a notary draft it?

Yes. Partner notaries can draft the document for you and advise you on what you need. notarity itself does not draft documents.

Does my affidavit need to be translated before the notarisation?

That depends on what the recipient needs. If they need a translation, you can order one at translate.notarity.com; the price depends on length and language pair. The partner notary notarises exactly the version you sign in the appointment, so if the signed version should be the translated one, translate first and sign afterwards.

Will authorities accept a digital copy?

Some do, some don't. Some countries still expect a physical copy, so it is best to always check with the recipient what exactly they require. If you need a paper version, it can be sent to any address.
